Syncing Google Contacts With SyncML!

It sounds very easy but really not much is available in terms of how to do it. The past couple of days I’ve been hunting high and low on Google on how to import my contacts from Gmail to my mobile which does support SyncML but is not an iPhone or an Android Phone and not even a Symbian phone. The challenge was in importing contacts from Gmail to my mobile phone which is a Motorola ROKR E6, but which comes with SyncML and ActiveSync. ActiveSync kept giving me “Authentication Error” despite all data being correct so I just had to keep it aside and give SyncML a try.

Syncing Google Contacts With SyncML

Well I have sort of succeeded, but not really in that I have managed to export data from my mobile phone to Gmail but have not been able to figure out the importing part yet. The exporting part works this way…

In SyncML –
Server Name Or Address: https://m.google.com/syncml
User Name: Your Google Account User ID @gmail.com
Password: Your Google Account Password
Only select “Contacts”
In database enter “contacts” in lowercase

Now you can synchronize via OTA (Over The Air) using GPRS or EDGE. In case you have Wi-Fi on your mobile I would tend to think it’s more of a smartphone than mine and hence Google would extend more support and allow two way syncing between your mobile and your Gmail Account. The only caveat here is you can sync from mobile to your Gmail Account and this works in adding new contacts as well as modifying old contacts. I’m yet to figure out how to get Gmail contacts to my mobile and I will post the updates as and when it happens.

Please before you try it out do backup all of your Gmail contacts.
