I am not much of a rapper, preferring instead to go with 1980s pop (my favorite genre for a long while), 1960s and 1970s rock and soft rock popularized by the likes of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Dire Straits who are all my favorite bands. However, there is something about Snoop Dogg that draws attention and I was introduced to him with Gangsta’s Paradise from the 1995 Michelle Pfeiffer movie Dangerous Minds. Ironically, I have never seen the movie Dangerous Minds itself, but I liked the song immensely and have been following on Snoop Dogg quite regularly. The only other rappers that I have heard on an intermittent to regular basis have been MC Hammer in the early 1990s, LL Cool J from around the same time and of late, though not very recently, Eminem. Hence, you can very well understand Snoop Dogg has my vote and that too on a consistent and regular basis. Ego Trippin’ is a good offering from Snoop Dogg, but certainly not his best work or even great work, but then it’s not a bad album either and will not be disappointing any of his fans. It just will not be going out of its way to win Snoop Dogg any new legion of fans.

Ego Trippin’ is a long album, coming in with 21 tracks and “Sensual Seduction” came in for the most chart topping success in the United States and worldwide, but on the whole the album has been well appreciated as a return to form for Snoop Dogg and has given him chart success after a break from the top 10 since the early to mid 2000. The story goes Ego Trippin’ was supposed to be an all solo effort from Snoop Dogg and hence the egoistic title, but then Snoop Dogg went ahead and collaborated with guests on the album. Whatever the reasons Snoop Dogg is pretty well justified in having his own Ego Trippin’ considering what has achieved in the music industry since his arrival about 15 years ago. All in all this is a good album to have in your music collection, especially if you are a Snoop Dogg fan, but even if you are not it is still a good rap album to have lying around for the occasional listen. It is definitely not throwing good money down the drain, but certainly good value and bang for the buck. It will also serve as a good introduction to Snoop Dogg to those who have not heard him, but my vote will go to the all time hit Gangsta’s Paradise any day.
