Sean Kingston – New Kid On The Block, But Way Better!

I recently came across Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston and that caught my attention. It’s not your usual hip-hop or rap that is associated with today’s music, but Sean Kingston sings reggae music and does a pretty good job of it too. What’s more amazing is that Sean Kingston is an 18-year-old chubby African-American teenager and not at all the picture of a singer/performer, but then appearances do deceive and I am sure Bob Dylan would not have sold any records in the MTV generation based on his music videos.

Sean Kingston’s self named debut is an energetic offering, geared towards reggae music, but not UB40 by any means, still a good offering for a debut. Sean Kingston does try to strain his vocals way too much to get the desired reggae effect and does fall flat on a couple of occasions, but I am sure able to overlook the occasional faux pas in what is generally a pretty good offering. The music is geared towards hip-hop and backed with fast paced rhythmic tempo, but it’s Sean Kingston’s energy that is really the driving force behind this album. I would definitely recommend this album especially if you are tired of Kanye West, 50 Cent, and the like and really miss Alicia Keys who has been missing in action for a while now. Bear in mind though don’t expect a genius or even a child genius on display, just good stuff that’s mainstream, edible and yet different from the mundane hip-hop and rap that’s being thrown out these days.

Notable track is “Beautiful Girls” which was probably the summer’s hit and you will definitely find yourself humming it. “Me Love” is pretty good too, but did not enjoy the chart success of “Beautiful Girls”. The rest of the tracks too are pretty decent foot tappers and make for easy listening. Sean Kingston’s strength lies in being backed by good producers who help in churning out this foot tapping music, but will be definitely tested in later offerings to make sure he does not remain a one hit wonder, but his first offering is a pretty good offering compared to today’s music on offer.
