The most unlikely of combinations here, heavy rocker Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and country singer Alison Krauss, and you begin to wonder what were the record producers/executives thinking of? Well someone did think right for this is a great combination here and a great album to boot. The result is a haunting piece of work, very mellow and soft unlike anything you would have heard from Robert Plant. Alison Krauss, well to tell you the truth, I have not heard her much and the only reason I picked up this album was because it won the Grammy for the Album of the Year and boy was I impressed and happy I did so.

Truly exceptional music here and one that warrants repeat listening time and again. The most surprising star act is from Robert Plant who is so toned down and mellow here that it’s surprising. It is Alison Krauss who takes the lead here with Robert Plant just blending in. In fact their vocals merge/become one so efficiently that it’s hard to describe where one ends and the other begins. Kudos to the producer T-Bone Burnette for really coming up with such a great album. The genres that are found on this album are as varied as they can get from rock, blues, gospel, bluegrass, pop, folk, and even international. If I may say so this is new territory for Robert Plant. Robert Plant has been at the forefront experimenting with different genres of music for the past decade and more and trying out new sounds, but this is a new direction in the form of a mellower and softer Robert Plant and not the screaming, head-banging rocker from Led Zeppelin that we have come to know and love over the years, but even then it’s tough to categorize Robert Plant in this album. All in all this one is a keeper and worth visiting every so often from your CD collection. A brilliant album and a must have in any collection. My only hope is it furthers and pushes the envelope even further letting other musicians take up such projects and push the frontiers and boundaries of music in new and exciting directions.
