At the very outset let me state that I was not in favor of the merger and now that news is out that Microsoft has called it off I am definitely happy with the outcome. You can catch up on the news report here. Let’s just hope things are left as they are and no one else tries to take Yahoo over. This is coming from an ex-Yahoo user who has since switched loyalties over to Google, but let me also state that I still have hope for Yahoo pulling through. They are still the most visited website in the World even at this moment and have popular services and offerings like Flickr, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger, etc. I remember the time when Yahoo was my homepage and not Google as it is now. I mean who will want a search engine for a homepage, but the truth of the matter is we are so fed on searching for what we want that many of us have Google set as our homepage. Even more than that I for one have switched loyalties over to Google since I was tired of the quality of service being provided by Yahoo with Yahoo Messenger constantly crashing, Yahoo Mail taking forever to load, etc. Compared to that Google’s offerings are free and work like a charm. I have not had one instance of Google Talk ever crashing and Gmail is superfast, clean and uncluttered, and not filled with ads that take forever to load. The huge storage space that Google started off with in Gmail was an added incentive, but of course now all email providers go with 2GB or unlimited space for their users. Compared to that my Hotmail account is still with 250MB and I shudder what would have happened to Yahoo Mail if the merger had gone through. I signed up for Hotmail back when it was owned by Sabeer Bhatia and the most popular email service going around. Then Microsoft happened and all of us watched as Microsoft took the most popular email service and ran it into the ground. I even got my Hotmail account suspended for non-usage since I had moved over to Yahoo. Of course I have since got it reactivated because of the need for a Passport ID and have even subscribed to a couple of spammers so that I can delete some mail off of it and keep the account active. The trouble one has to go through with Microsoft just to use their services. Of course Microsoft is not without its merits. I still have to find a better OS than Windows XP, but then even this good thing is being pulled off by Microsoft. At the rate Microsoft is going there will be nothing left to run into the ground what with Google offering everything Microsoft does, but only better and for free! The only thing missing is an OS from Google, but that might never happen since Google has demonstrated enough brains to go with a winning product and not step into something that will not profit them. The only exception to this is YouTube, but even then one can say that YouTube is the most popular video sharing site in the world. It’s just that Google has not come up with an idea that works in monetizing it as of yet that is, but who knows what Google might turn up with.
We have so many companies trying to outdo Google or beat Google by all means and methods, but how come no one studies Google’s strategy and implements something like that. I can give so many reasons why I like Google and use Google and if other companies can understand that and offer the same then there is no reason why users will want to use their products and services too. Google’s strategy has been simple. Offer great products and services for free. Google Documents and Google Notebook are free and offer the same functionality as does Microsoft Office and even more since they are available online they are also available at anytime and anyplace as long as there is a system with an internet connection around and mind you in today’s world you really have to go a long way to not find both.
Finally, coming to what has become everyone’s bane, Google search. Once again a great and free service that works. This blog gets 82% of its traffic from Google search, not other search engines, not Social Networks, not even paid advertisements and not even Google’s own AdWords. This just proves the superiority of Google Search and it’s really not surprising why they own the market in this all important area of search. Google AdSense is free and yet provides me with a little bit of side income and the process of signing up is so easy and quick. Now try to sign up with Yahoo and Microsoft and you will understand what I mean. This is so true in every area of products and services that are offered by the big three and yet Microsoft and Yahoo never seem to figure out why Google keeps pulling away from them and getting ahead all the time. Wish they did for then I would have a plethora of products and services all for free and that too from the big three. I hope someone from Microsoft and Yahoo reads this and works on emulating Google for that’s the way to true success in the online world. Even the internet itself was designed to be a free tool and given away for free. Imagine if CERN had decided to charge for the internet then none of us would be here. How much more then to be successful on it we have to give stuff away for free and make money through other means like online advertising and even more so from users/visitors’ goodwill.

Good point bud… However, I still like Yahoo, though as you said Google is my homepage. Yahoo has a wide range of services to offer where as Google is only search related business.

Even I still have myself registered for a lot of Yahoo services, but really experience a problem with Yahoo Mail (takes too long to load, does not work with Opera browser) and Yahoo Messenger keeps crashing all the while. I dont think its fair to call Google only a search company anymore. They have the best video sharing site in YouTube, Picasa is as good any photo sharing site, Google Talk is the best chatting s/w available, Gmail rocks, Google Docs are becoming popular even with organizations, Orkut is quite popular in India and other parts of the world like South America, well the list can go on and on. I do still like Yahoo and hope they improve their services and products is what I would state in ending though.
