Mad Max With Wife Who Is Still Not Over Mel Gibson!

in General,Movie Reviews!

Mad MaxThe fever I was having yesterday did leave at last, but it left me drained and weak and unable to attend work so I ended up calling in sick for work today. My wife had other ideas like watching a Mel Gibson movie (still not over the Lethal Weapon series) so it was a toss up between Mad Max or a newer movie like Payback. We decided to go with Mad Max so we could catch up on the trilogy as even I did not have any memories of the Mad Max series.

Coming to the movie, well this was Mel Gibson before he became Mel Gibson. The movie is a wild west running amok, but only set in the future and with cowboys on iron horses and just as wild and mean. Mel Gibson plays a cop Max Rockatansky whose city or maybe the entire country, we are not informed, is running over with vicious, biker gangs who are a law unto themselves with the police force being ineffective in handling them whatsoever.

At the very outset there is a car chase with a mad biker at the wheel of a car with his girlfriend in it running away being chased by the cops. He is unstoppable and after numerous crashes he is finally stopped by Gibson and ends up hurtling into another car ending up in a ball of flames with his girlfriend. This sets the tone for his friends, a gang of bikers, to visit the town and to take possession of his casket. The gang once in town starts running amok and ends up tearing the town apart. Gibson and the other cops do arrest a few, but the case gets thrown out due to lack of witnesses. Gibson’s best friend on the force Goose loses control and ends up throwing a punch at one of the gang members who swears revenge. Goose is waylaid the next day and ends up crashing his car with fuel leaking all over. The biker gang member end up torching Goose and Gibson’s performance as he watches a charred Goose at the hospital is great. Gibson ends up quitting the force and takes time off with his wife and child, but trouble does not leave our hero alone. On the trip Gibson’s wife ends up having a run-in with Toecutter the leader of the biker gang and so the gang ends up following the family to their family farm. Gibson ends up losing his wife and his child and then turns vigilante and ends up killing the entire biker gang as revenge for the deaths of his friend, wife and child.

The action sequences are simply superb and extremely well done. The movie itself was shot in Australia and this really adds to a desolate and brooding atmosphere in the movie. Performances are uniformly good, but Gibson is clearly the winner here and just fills the screen with his magnetic personality. A really good cult/classic movie that is definitely worth going back to.

Mad Max is an excellent movie, and Mel Gibson is great in it. I liked the sequels too.

Yup Ian. Truly a great movie that launched Mel Gibson. Personally cannot wait to catch up on the remaining parts.

Mad Max is timeless, I was able to watch it in high school and all I can say is that even if you watch it today, you wont feel its effects being left out.
