God has given all of us an internal guidance system. Yes really and it’s too bad most of us are looking for direction from the outside which is really not wrong, but it’s not what God intended and not really the best source of guidance. What God really intended is for Him to lead us and guide and be our Guide. That’s why Lord Jesus identified himself as a Shepherd and us His followers as the sheep. He even said the sheep will know the Shepherd’s voice and listen to Him and obey Him and follow Him. Now obviously the questions that begs to be asked is do you know His voice and do you follow Him.
Unfortunately for many of us this is where it tends to go wrong. Listening to God’s voice should be the easiest of tasks and yet it ends up being tougher and more difficult than it really ought to. To begin with most people are looking in the wrong places to hear His voice and it’s not surprising that they do not hear God for themselves. Please note I said they do not hear God and not God is not speaking. In fact God is always speaking, it’s just us who are not listening to Him. The first thing to do right on your way to hearing God’s voice for yourself is to look in the right place. The right place is inside of you that’s why I call it the internal guidance system. Firstly we need to realize that God is a Spirit. Yeah He is the Paramaatma. Now God being a Spirit communicates to us through His Spirit who is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit communicates to us through our human spirit. Being spirit He will not communicate with our minds or our flesh since they will not be able to understand Him. Only the human spirit can understand Him. Next the human spirit will convey the guidance or instructions it receives from the Holy Spirit to our minds in ways it can comprehend and understand. This the human spirit will do in thoughts and impressions (AKA as the 6th sense, premonition, etc.) and will also do it when we sleep in the form of dreams (not daydreaming). That’s just the language of the human spirit and inputs from the human spirit being conveyed to our flesh or in other words our mind. Now once we begin to understand this it becomes easier to identify and listen to God’s voice. We begin by looking in the right place. Also, any impression or thought or a "deep knowing" is always from the human spirit to our soulish realm (which comprises the mind and the human emotions). Our human spirit is God knowing i.e. it knows God. That’s why we can experience God only in our spirits and relate to God in our spiritual realm and our spiritual experience.
Now that we understand that God is always speaking, and it’s us who need to start concentrating and listening to Him it helps us immensely to know the right place to look for God’s voice, instruction and guidance. This is not in our flesh realm and also not our mental or soulish realm. It’s in our spirits that we need to seek God and His voice. I will speak more on this subject as the days go by. For starters you can read The Still Small Voice… which delves into this subject.
