This is something that the Lord has been dealing with me lately. We really have a say in how our mates are, we can even decide on their personality, their character, their success and worthiness, and generally the kind of person they are. This even applies to our parents, siblings, friends, colleagues, people we interact with daily and even people we have to interact with daily and even our boss!
The scripture portion is taken from Romans 4:17 and says “God Calleth Those Things Which Be Not As Though They Were”. Please note the tense change in the scripture. God calls (present) those things which are not (future) as though they were (past/present). In other words God acts and behaves as if it has already taken place and refers to it in the present as if it’s existing.
We see in Genesis 17:15-17, God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” I want you to note that no matter what Abraham felt or thought, he did start calling his wife Sarah and not Sarai IMMEDIATELY. This is something that most of us fail to do i.e. confess and speak out God’s Word in a given situation and instead go with our feelings, our thoughts or even more so with the opinions of others around us. In fact the Bible says in Romans 4:3 “For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” Abraham believed God! Might be he did it immediately, or maybe he did after sometime, but we know for sure that he believed God. We also know for sure he started siding with God’s Word and started confessing God’s Word in agreement with God. Like Abraham we need to start doing the same things i.e. speak God’s Word in agreement with Him, and start believing God!
Confessing and meditating on God’s Word should be an integral part of any believer’s life, but that’s an entirely different message. The message I am talking about is the words we speak over our spouses, kids, siblings, parents, friends, colleagues, etc. If you will note Sarah was old (which means wrinkled and unattractive in present day beautician terminology) and past the age of childbearing, but Abraham never confessed those things in his mate. He in fact called her “mother of nations” and later on in Genesis 20 we learn how Sarah was so beautiful that Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. What caused Sarah to change so much and become so attractive that a king was after her? Well I am no beautician, but I do know we did not have plastic surgery in those days. In fact the only thing I am aware of that can create and change is the spoken Word of God. Right from the very beginning in Genesis we learn God said and there was. Of course God spoke His Word, Jesus Christ Himself, who has the power within Him to create and hold everything and in fact holds everything in the Universe by the power of His Word and things took place. Similarly Abraham too spoke God’s Word over his wife and we know the transformation that took place in Sarah. Now it’s up to us to speak God’s Word over our spouses, kids, siblings, parents, friends, colleagues and probably even our boss and watch the transformation take place. It is in the area of our spouse though that we really need to work and speak God’s Word over them the most. We need to stop pointing out their faults and shortcomings and stop picking on their mistakes and inabilities. Rather we should start confessing God’s Word and say what God says about them and watch it come true as God manifests His Word.
