Going The Fruit Diet Way…

I have recently started on a fruit only diet. Yes you heard me right, only fruits for food, nothing else. No meat, no vegetables, no bread or butter, no nothing else, just fruits and fruit juices. Now I’m not a health fanatic or big time into exercise or bodybuilding, but this was a decision I made after a recent round of illness. I was bitten by the flu bug and was down for nearly a week, too weak to even get out of bed for most of the day. Nothing else was working like medicines, traditional home remedies, etc. You can say inspiration struck or revelation came to me, but I knew I had to go on a fruit only diet for a while. Well the very first day I had an apple and some grapes and lots of fresh lime juice and the very next day I was up and about. Yes you heard me right in one day I was up and about and everyone was saying I was looking rested, refreshed, and great. What medicines and other traditional remedies along with so much advice and bed rest could not achieve for more than a week, fresh fruits like an apple, some grapes and fresh lime juice did and that too in a single day.

Fruit Diet

I have to admit here I am not much of a fruit eater. Whatever habit I had of eating fruits went away along with my childhood. After that it was only chicken (lots of it), fried food (lots of oil and deep fried) and lots and lots of junk food. In simpler terms food great for my mind but not for my body and very obviously the side effects of that were quite evident too. Well now that I’ve made a decision to go with a fruit only diet for a while and then later on move to vegetables and keep the meats to a minimum, I’m sure all the detoxification will take place and leave in its stead a healthier and better looking me.

I will list some of the benefits of having fruit in your diet.

  • For me personally the benefit that was evident right from day one was a feeling of lightness even though my stomach was full. It was as if the apple I had eaten had been assimilated and digested immediately and it was not going to take hours like with other foods. A great feeling of lightness.
  • It will help immensely in weight reduction and losing weight and all unwanted fat. I have also been told that fruits are low in sodium which makes it difficult to gain water weight like with other foods high in sodium content.
  • You will have more energy and can work more, exercise more, and also the need for sleep comes down so generally you have more energy and more time too.
  • Fresh fruit will provide all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and natural fiber that our bodies need.
  • Major health benefits like stopping of graying of hair and balding (even premature balding), dark circles under the eyes meaning you are more rested and not so much restless and not nervous or high-strung all the time.
  • Fruit juices are the best thirst quenchers without any of the high sugar content that comes with the colas, cold coffees and other content.
  • Lower cholesterol levels and less of fat and oil in your body.
  • Detoxification of your entire body and a thorough cleansing of the innards of your body that will have even your skin and hair looking great.
  • Fruit juices are also great for those with a sore throat who cannot swallow food, or the elderly who cannot chew food, and even children who are very fussy with their food.
  • Fruits also function as laxatives that will aid in your digestive process as they are high in fiber content.
  • Fruits will help you to stay healthy and not fall sick and also younger (yes they prevent ageing) as they are loaded with antioxidants
  • Studies have shown that a diet high in fruits will prevent many neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and others.

Fruit Diet

Well I can go on and on, but I am sure you get the picture and decide for yourself and your family to start on fruits in a big way. You may wonder when is the best time to eat fruits. Well it is recommended that fruits are taken before the main meals or the main course while the stomach is empty. This will mean you will end up eating less of junk food, oily food, etc. If you eat fruit after a full meal then you will end up eating less fruit resulting in less benefit and also will have had your fill of junk food, oily food, etc.

Please note that I’m not a professional nutritionist so please do check with your doctor for any health related issues. Also, a fruit only diet is not recommended long term as that would result in muscle loss. The best way to go about it is by having a fruit only diet one day a week especially for working professionals. Even this is the method followed if you check into a spa or any similar program. The other way is like I’ve mentioned to eat fruits before having your regular meals. Another way that I personally follow is to have fruits for say dinner or breakfast everyday instead of eating other regular meals. At other times you can have other regular meals and this way you will have the best of everything. I will post further on my fruit adventures as I go along and happy fruit feasting.

    Rajiv,
It's extremely unhealthy to go the 100% fruit way unless you handpick the right fruits. As we all know every meal should contain 50% of carbs and some amount of protein to sustain the bodily functions (if not growth). Please note that eating a lot of grapes/oranges wouldn't help. My recommendation would be to take at least a boiled medium sized potato (at least twice) along with the fruits. If you are adamant on using only fruits you should eat a lot of bananas (if possible semi ripe), pineapples and mangoes as those are the fruits with some carbs and are easily available in our part of the world. Also please remember that if you are going high on sweet fruits (along with good consumption of solid sugar) you are at risk to develop type II diabetics.

Even I am getting a lot of flus and sinus related issues. I cut down on fatty food and salts after my BP suddenly went up to 170-100 mainly due to work pressure of late. Fortunately, cholesterol and sugar levels are well under control. I need to build some good HDL though for which fish, oatmeal, cranberry juice route is the best approach.

    Hi Ajith,

You are right, a 100% fruit diet is not recommended at all. I too read about its ill effects. I'm doing this only for like 3-4 days for detoxification and after that I plan to have one meal consisting only of fruits preferably dinner. I'm just working on cutting down the meats and oily stuff and increasing the fruits and vegetables. Previously I've been “chicken Rajiv” where I had chicken daily at least twice a day in fact for many, many years. Now I'm moving away from that and instead I've been having an egg a day. Let's see, I plan to consult a nutritionist for a dedicated diet plan soon.

    Hi,

I too have started going the fruitarian (and nuts) way. Now my breakfast is “One Banana, 2 Dates & Few Ground Nuts (roasted)”. Lunch is “Two Bananas, Few Cashew Nuts (roasted)”. I dont control my dinner right now.

    Hi Venu,

It's better you have fruits for dinner and have a normal breakfast or lunch. Sleep is much better when you've had fruits for dinner. But do eat other meals apart from fruits at least once a day.
