The track Shine from this album which was the very first by the group Collective Soul set a standard very few ever achieve even after spending years in the music industry, but Collective Soul managed it with their very first album. The feat or achievement you might wonder? Well simply that the song Shine is one of the best rock songs ever. My wife is not much into rock, but even she is humming to Shine as its being played right now. In fact I remember reading somewhere that the only complaint with this album was that Shine was the first track on it. Everybody hears it, then listens to it again and again, but do not catch up on the other great numbers on this album. Well just to mention it yet again, the track Shine is alone worth the price of the CD.

The rest of the album has some pretty good tracks and also some filler stuff to fill in the mandatory 60-70 minutes on the CD, but still a very good debut by Collective Soul that showed this was a supergroup in the making and with enough lungpower to go the distance. Well they have proved it though going strong even now considering they debuted way back in 1994 when I was a kid. The atmosphere and the rock scene too was not conducive for Collective Soul to announce themselves on the rock stage arena considering they were running alongside such acts like Nirvana, Hootie & The Blowfish, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden (all my favorites) who were dominating the airwaves. My favorite albums from that era were Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten. Of course Collective Soul too dominated the airwaves that year especially with the aforementioned single Shine, but it just goes to show who Collective Soul shared the stage with and that too with their debut album. There are other noteworthy tracks too on the album like Reach, Wasting Time, Sister Don’t Cry, Heaven’s Already Here to name a few. A quick listen through the album speaks volumes for the multiple talents at work on it and how multitalented and multifaceted Collective Soul are. The sound is not so much grunge as rock, but yet not classic rock. It’s very much akin to grunge being polished to look and sound like rock especially from the late 1970s era.
The recording quality though is not top notch on this album as it was more of a demo piece that was hurriedly used. In fact it was more of a backing up band that was used to support the lead singer Ed Roland, but rest assured this is an album you will enjoy very, very much, it’s that good. Go ahead and get it, it’s that simple.
