For a couple of days I did not post a blog or new content due to a combination of factors like my system going down and also after it was fixed I spent time catching up on reading a lot of blogs and also on Social Networking. What I noted was that when I did not post any new blogs, the traffic to my website had come down considerably. I did post new content after this period of inactivity and I noted that the traffic to my blog had spiked up to 400% on the day I posted new blogs and that it stayed at that figure as I continued to post new content. This set me thinking and hence this blog, which is better, to blog and keep posting new content or to promote your blogs via Social Networking. Where should my time and effort go? A couple of factors to take into consideration here. I have been doing Social Networking for a while now on all the usual channels, but have not really had traffic pouring into my blog from any of the Social Networks. In fact Google continues to lead traffic generation to my blog by margins that are way ahead of the pack. Here are some of the stats and they are the top 3 referrers to my blog.
Today –
Google Search – 77.34%
Direct – 11.72%
Digg – 4.69%
Last 7 days –
Google Search – 69.86%
Direct – 15.46%
Digg – 5.56%
Last 30 days –
Google Search – 66.41%
Direct – 18.85%
Digg – 4.98%
The rest is made up of Yahoo Search, links from other blogs, etc.
This should convince many to concentrate on just content and leave the rest to Google to drive home traffic to their blog. Even I asked myself the same question, but there are other factors to consider too. This question is a Damocles Sword answer either way you look at it for content is king and if there is no content then there will be no visitors to the blog, however, if there is content and yet no visitors even then it serves no purpose. We do write blogs so that they will be read, enjoyed and benefit everyone all over. Also, I felt that I was looking at only one side of the story – MINE! As if to answer all unanswered questions I read an article on DoshDosh titled Building a Popular Social Media Profile: Seven Essential Characteristics where Maki has talked about Social Networking and its importance in developing and driving traffic to a blog and that too from personal experiences with Digg, StumbleUpon, Twitter and the like, some of the very Social Networks I have been using. This article did present a different side of the coin and painted a very different picture from the one I was seeing from traffic stats to my blog. This made me realize that even though the traffic from Digg was low and also I did have traffic from other sources like Twitter and BlogCatalog again low, it was still consistent traffic and also it was exposing my blog to new people who would in all probability be introducing my blog to other new people too. So what should one do? Well back again to the Damocles Sword and the answer I believe is doing a bit of both and that too always. We do need to write new content always and we also need to set aside time to network and market our blogs so that new readers will be made aware of it and will come and read the content that is being put up. In fact most bloggers will tell you that it took nearer to 6 months before they climbed up the Social Networking ladder and traffic started pouring into their blogs from the Social Networks. Talk about perseverance, I am sure if I had more of it my blog would have reached the stratosphere by now, but at least I am learning and working. So the lesson I have learnt and my message (not in a bottle) to all is, keep writing lots of new content and also set aside time on a regular basis to market this new content.

Ajay, it depends on what works for you. I would appreciate traffic from Social Networks myself but have not managed to generate much from them till now. I will in the long term, but as of now its Google sending most of the traffic my way. I do not mean neglect Social Networking or neglect Google for that matter. We do need traffic from all sources, the more the better.

Yes even I noted Akismet tagging your comments as spam. Anyway I have unspammed them and it should be fine now since Akismet learns from its mistakes. Let me know if any further such instances and maybe I can check on contacting Akismet about what needs to be done further.
