Well the last part about Avast being the best in the business in terms of free antivirus products would be debatable, but pretty much everyone will rank it at the very top along with its closest competitor Avira and others like AVG and the recent entrant Panda Cloud Antivirus. Avast has been providing free antivirus software for a good few years and they have excelled at it in fact so much so that they have gone past 100 million registered users. I have personally been using it for a few years now and very certainly recommend for everyone to try it out. You will be surprised at how good Avast really is.

The past week or so I have been previewing, using and testing out Avast 5 (from ALWIL Software) which is still in beta. The current version of Avast is 4.8.1367 but for version 5 they have revisited the drawing board it seems. The entire interface has changed dramatically and for the better too as most found the CD Player interface of Avast a bit hard to use in terms of finding the menu settings and options. The looks however are really of no significance to me or anyone else if the antivirus does not do its job of protecting and securing your PC. Avast Antivirus has scored really well over the years in all the major antivirus testing fields like AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, Virus Bulletin so I will not go into depth on that front. I will however say I did throw some external media like CDs, DVDs, external HDDs that had malware and Avast was the first one to react and neutralize any infection while the resident AV scanner still snoozing!

The biggest improvement in Avast 5 is in terms of performance with a new heuristics engine, new antivirus and antispyware engines, enhancement in the behavior guard, antimalware all of which are documented on the Avast Blog. For the PC user all of this translates into a product that protects your system exceptionally well and will also use very less system resources when scanning the system for any malware. It just does not get any better than this for a free product but I am backing Avast 5 Antivirus to give the paid antivirus giants a scare in the year 2010. Avast 5 Antivirus should be released early next year so stay tuned at http://www.avast.com/.
