Ever since I started on my fruit diet I’ve been eating a lot of apples, anywhere from 2 to 3 apples a day. This brought to my mind something I’ve been hearing right from my childhood which is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” and I set about trying to find if that was really true. Here are some of my findings, but let me caution you I’m no doctor, and all of this is information that I’ve researched for myself on the internet and now I’m sharing the same here.

- Apples contain Vitamin C which boosts the immune system which means that you will fall sick less and when you do fall sick you will recover and heal faster.
- Apples contain polyphenols which reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by decreasing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol.
- Apples contain flavonoids which again prevent cardiovascular disease and are also known for their antioxidant properties which delay the ageing process.
- Apples prevent multiple forms of cancer like colon cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.
- Apples (and all other fruits) have natural sugars which are low in calories and also better for health. Reaching for an apple is way better than reaching for a snack when you are hungry.
- Apples contain phytonutrients which prevent neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
- Apple juice (not the flavored one), but the juice that flows as you bite and chew an apple prevents tooth decay. This is a great way to keep children’s teeth healthy and strong as the apple juice kills over 80% of bacteria.
- Apples help in lowering respiratory ailments like asthma.
- Apples being a good source of dietary fiber aid in the digestion process. They also aid in losing weight as eating one apple makes your stomach full.

Now coming to the eating part, the best way to have an apple is to eat it raw. This will satisfy the sweet tooth, and also keep the belly full. I have heard of applesauce but this is something I’ve not yet eaten personally so I will leave the decision to you. Apple juice is another great way to have apples, but not the fermented one, instead have natural apple juice or make it yourself at home. My wife loves apple pie so this is another great method to have apples. My choice is to have it raw and I end up substituting it for one meal every day, usually dinner so I don’t end up going to bed stuffed with oily food. Any way the choice is yours, but an apple a day will really keep the doctor away so go ahead and indulge yourself in apples of chocolates and other such stuff. You and your body both will be glad you did.
