It was time for our usual dose of weekend entertainment and my wife and I went to the movies and watched Allu Arjun’s Parugu. Coming as it does after the hugely successful Desamuduru, which became Allu Arjun’s highest grossing film ever and also coming from the makers of the hugely successful Bommarillu expectations from this movie are definitely sky high and while it does not better Bommarillu it also does not disappoint and is a good feather in Allu Arjun’s growing and well stocked cap which is an accomplishment in itself for someone so young and only in his 7th movie. The story is simple and deals with human emotions and director Bhaskar in his 2nd outing deals with the relationship between a father and daughter in this movie. Movie goers will remember his first Bommarillu dealt with the relationship between a father and a son and while it does not better Bommarillu, Parugu still comes off well and is a commendable offering from director Bhaskar in his 2nd outing.
At the very outset we are introduced to Prakash Raj a village elder and it is the day his eldest daughter Poonam Bajwa is getting married. One look at her and we know she is not happy and she ends up running away and eloping with her boyfriend leaving a distraught and humiliated Prakash Raj who immediately turns vengeful and starts hunting the guy who stole his daughter. To this end Prakash Raj, his relatives and his henchmen start by tracking all the friends of Poonam Bajwa’s boyfriend and they forcibly bring all his friends to their village so they will reveal the whereabouts of the eloped couple. Allu Arjun is also a friend of the boyfriend and he is also forcibly brought to the village of Prakash Raj and interrogated. Allu Arjun feigns ignorance of the entire situation, but is not believed and is kept a prisoner in the village against his will and informed that he will be set free along with the other friends of the boyfriend only when Poonam Bajwa and her boyfriend are found. Allu Arjun and the other friends decide to escape from the village and make a break for it early the next morning to catch the early morning train that makes its way through the village. While escaping Allu Arjun sees a beautiful girl in the early morning mist and it is love at first sight for him and he decides against escaping and returns to the village with the goal of winning this girl’s love. It turns out that the girl is Prakash Raj’s younger daughter and the heroine of the movie Sheela. Allu Arjun and the other friends are kept imprisoned in a barn outside of Prakash Raj’s home and this leads to Sheela interacting with Allu Arjun and his friends to find the whereabouts of her eloped sister of course with neither coming face to face. There are a couple of funny incidents with Allu Arjun maneuvering and scheming to interview every girl in the village to find the beautiful girl he came across in the early morning mist. Of course things cannot remain hidden for long and in due course Allu Arjun finds that the girl he is looking for is Sheela and that she is Prakash Raj’s younger daughter. A sudden twist in events and even Prakash Raj and everyone else comes to know that it is Allu Arjun who helped Poonam Bajwa and her boyfriend elope. Now Prakash Raj and his henchmen beat up and force Allu Arjun to reveal the whereabouts of the eloped couple and Allu Arjun reveals that they are in Hyderabad and also manages to maneuver and scheme things in such a way that Prakash Raj along with his henchmen also bring Sheela to Hyderabad on their search for the eloped couple. Allu Arjun of course lies about the eloped couple being in Hyderabad and has only one aim to get Sheela to fall in love with him. The rest of the story is about how Allu Arjun achieves this. However, certain events change Allu Arjun’s mindset and make him realize that he has made a mistake in helping the couple elope and how he has wronged Prakash Raj by separating him and his elder daughter. The lead up to the climax is funny with Prakash Raj and his interaction with Allu Arjun. Prakash Raj in the climax again faces a similar situation as at the beginning with the marriage of his younger daughter who is in love with Allu Arjun but marrying a man chosen by her father and Prakash Raj is once again faced with the prospect of his younger daughter eloping with Allu Arjun. Allu Arjun of course has realized his mistake by now and refuses to elope, but all things end well with Prakash Raj realizing his mistake in denying his daughter’s love and he unites Allu Arjun and Sheela in the climax.

Coming to the performances, Prakash Raj once again excels in the movie being such an accomplished actor. His emotions and mannerisms are spot on and a particular scene in which he breaks down and reveals his feelings and emotions to Allu Arjun about what his daughter means to him is excellent. The rest of the cast are adequate to fair and do what is required of them. Sheela is ok, but it is not believable that Allu Arjun falls for her and it is love at first sight since she is not so pretty. A more beautiful face would have been more convincing.
The star of the movie is its hero Allu Arjun. He has excelled in the movie in every frame and in every department. He has always been an excellent dancer and his dancing in Parugu is no exception. The songs Chal Chal, Parugulu, and Yelageyalaga have excellent dance movements and it is a joy to watch Allu Arjun perform in them. It is his acting performance that really shines and comes to the fore in Parugu. He matches well with Prakash Raj and keeps his own in their emotion charged scenes especially with Prakash Raj turning in a good performance. With Parugu Allu Arjun has come a full circle as a complete entertainer. His action sequences are good, he evokes laughter from everyone in the comedy scenes, and even his emoting is done very well.
All in all Parugu is a good package and not to be missed from the current crop of movies. Go ahead and watch, its worth a lot more than the price of its ticket.
